Growing the Tail

January 20th, 2007 by Vlad | Filed under Other (Fom Old Blog).

HittailAfter learning about Hittail at TechCrunch some time ago, I finally decided to try it out on my site. While being some what skeptical initially, as the “tail” of keywords of my site is growing (see the image to the right) I definitely see some wonderful benefits of using this widget.

The widget collects the information on referring URLs that lead visitors to your website, if the visitor found your website via a search engine a keyword is added to the “tail”. The “pink” keywords make up top ten keywords that were used in search engines to find your website , while the “green” keywords make what is known as “long” tail. According to Hittail creators (watch the demo here) long tail accounts for less competitive keywords, and if you concentrate on those keywords it may result in a long term benefits for your website.

As I am looking at the entire tail today, about 5 days after starting to use this widget, the majority of keywords in long tail are still quiet competitive. So I probably should not pass any judgments, specially since I have done absolutely nothing in regards to those keywords. But I can see even now some great benefit of using the Hittail. This widget can be particularly useful to bloggers who are constantly writing new content on their blogs. If you ever decide to use Hittail, you will probably never feel again in your life like you have nothing to write about .
