Tips To Keep Your PR Unblemished

Date October 28, 2007 Comments

My wife and I are going on a trip to North Carolina tomorrow- of course this will result in things being quiet around here. Before I take this vacation I wanted to post something here on the subject that shook (and shocked) many bloggers the Google PR Update. I am not sure if I am as excited about PR as I used to be, but since I am still writing about it, it must be important.

As most of you, I was wondering about a pattern of what took place. It is only one’s guess why and how penalties were implemented.

So to lighted up the situation I decided to find some fun practices which will keep your Page Rank untouched. Hopefully you can ad your own fun way to please the big G:

  1. Link to pornographic websites as much as you can.
  2. Kiss up to Google and never tell them they are stupid.
  3. If you sell links or write paid reviews make sure to report and snitch on your fellow webmasters who do the same.
  4. Yours next…….

Please share some fun ways to keep your websites PR high and untouched. I hope we can come up with a list of at least 10 best practices to do so. Help me out! ;)

OpenAds Testing: Help Me Out And Click That Banner

Date October 26, 2007 Comments

I have been testing OpenAds for last few days and am having some issues with click tracking side of things. I have often wondered who and when clicks on my ads and OpenAds makes this kind of tracking a little easier. Or does it?

Last few days, after being liked to by Andy Beard which triggered a wave of links and traffic, presented a great opportunity for testing. I was in particular focusing on geo-targeting features of OpendAds. However I incidentally discovered that either OpenAds is not suitable for affiliate links or – are you ready?- I am being cheated by my affiliate networks. But before I point my finger to any party…

… here are some numbers form two ad zones served by OpenAds to put things in prospective. First here is a snap of yesterdays totals according to OpenAds:

OpenAds Stats

And get this one! My affiliate networks are reporting that yesterday these two ad zones send to my merchants only 14 clicks/visitors. Quite a loss of clicks if you asked me!

Before I begin point my finger at any particular party I would like to run a test and you can help me with it. Just click that banner above- it will land you on one of my other blogs. Hopefully I can collect some conclusive data on whether or not OpenAds is good for serving your affiliate links- or whether or not I am being treated well by my merchants/affiliate networks. Either way it may be interesting experiment. Thanks in advance to every one who will click the banner.

And of course if you have experienced similar problems and have found a solution, please let me know.

WidgetBucks Round Four

Date October 25, 2007 Comments

If you think I am going at it again bashing WidgetBucks- I am not. In fact I am experiencing the change of heart. And of course I would like to apologize to some bloggers for overly criticizing them for getting involved with WidgetBucks.

I am not putting the widget on my website, but there are signs that WidgetBucks may address the areas of TOS that I had the biggest issues with.

Just to underline again, the biggest problem that I have with WidgetBucks is the hidden html link, which can not be removed from the widget according to TOS. Quick fix would be to allow publishers removing/nofollowing the link if they wish, and make the link clearly visible in the widget.

I have no problem at all with the fact that they have changed terms and referral structure just hours after the products launch. Working with Commission Junction merchants I receive at least one notice each day that some merchant decided to change the terms, so I can live with that.

Are Your Ready For No-AdSense No-Adwords Day?

Date October 24, 2007 Comments

There are no big changes on the Wall Street today, after Google danced around and penalized websites by reducing so called “page rank”. Google stock closed at $675.82 just 5 cents more than it closed yesterday.

In fact it does not look to have any effect at all on how the stock traded today, even though there was about $15 dip today around 11am, just about the time news about page rank penalties have hit the blogoshpere. The question is are the two connected?

It is a little bit puzzling that a CNNmoney geeky reporter did not even mention that there were some waves in the blogosphere over the penalties, considering the fact that CNN is owned by Time Warner who also owns AOL one of the largest Google’s partners.

If any one can make Google dance, it will be giants like eBay or Time Warner.

But what about us bloggers and small time players? Well I believe that that collectively we can deliver a strong message to big G. How? How about “No AdSense- No AdWords Day”? I believe that collectively we can send massage as strong ad eBay did once upon a time.

Update: If you read the comments on CNNmoney article, there is comment by a guy who sold all of his stock at $670- I wonder if he was a blogger??? ;)

Are You Linking To Me?- Better Take Those Links Down!!!

Date October 24, 2007 Comments

Well, I am not surprised. Evidently Google has decided to punish me as well. At least this may be looked as a consolation to other bloggers out there. Noticed I said consolation not justification.

The drop in page rank from PR4 to PR2 is significant I would say. So am I a bad neighborhood? I wish Google would put out a list of websites that are qualified as “bad websites to link to”. There are about 500 blogs out there that link to me, some have a site-wide blogroll links pointing my way. If you are one of those please consider to remove your link to my website. I am very serious about it- no offense will be taken.
